At NANDINEE PHOOKAN ARCHITECTS we create value through design. In all of our projects, ranging from urban and built environments to furniture, graphics, and products, we apply creative thinking to achieve synergies in both tangible and intangible forms.

From its inception the focus of our firm has been on design excellence across scales in all of our projects. With increasing globalization our mission has evolved to include collaborations and partnerships with local artisans and professionals to create responsible designs that build on sustainable traditions and techniques.

The studio environment of our firm nurtures and promotes creativity, where the process of design simultaneously explores technical and programmatic as well as social, conceptual, and aesthetic issues.

Nandinee Phookan started the firm in 1996. She has a Master's degree in Housing and Environmental Design from MIT and a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Delhi in India.

Nandinee worked at several architectural firms including Charles Correa Associates in Bombay and Bond Ryder/ Davis Brody Bond in New York before starting her firm. She also taught Architectural Design studios as an Adjunct Professor at Pratt Institute and the City College of the City University of New York.

At MIT, Nandinee worked with N. John Habraken on the application of his system of "Supports and Infill" to create flexible, adaptable spaces in the context of multi-family housing. She was the recipient of an Aga Khan Travel Grant which led to the photo documentation of the urban fabric in Ajmer, India. She also did a series of drawings on the vernacular architecture of Kulu Valley in India under the sponsorship of E. Alkazi.

Nandinee's broad interest in the application of design thinking is reflected in the firm's portfolio of projects ranging from graphics and branding, textiles, furniture and exhibition design to architecture and urban design.
