Biography

Kathryn has been working in the interior design industry since 1980. She studied in Dallas, Texas and Rome, Italy, earning a B.F.A. in studio art as well as a B.F.A in Italian studies from Southern Methodist University. She also attended the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York City and has received several awards for her paintings. She is essentially self taught in the interior design field, following the age old idea of apprenticeship, hard work and a passion to learn as a good path to learn a craft. The two year period in which she designed her own residence was the most intense learning experience, as she filled the role of designer, client and construction worker all in the same project, giving her direct insight into the point of view of each in relation to a project development and execution. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to begin her design career at Vignelli Associates in New York City. Massimo and Lella's philosophy that everything has its own order found through discipline, appropriateness and ambiguity influenced her design approach to this day. Kathryn then worked for several other New York design firms before starting her own company in 1994.

Over the years she has created custom furniture and lighting designs for clients resulting in a private line of home furnishings and China patterns, available by order. Kathryn also designed the Imperial Egg dinnerware pattern for Faberge, which was available in stores worldwide for over 10 years.

Kathryn is passionate about creating beautiful surroundings and believes beauty can be found in the simplest things around us. Luxury is the condition of being surrounded by beauty and is not necessarily defined by expensive items. Her diverse and international clientele has ranged from the President of Tatarstan in Russia to prominent professionals, entrepreneurs and CEO's In the United States, Europe and China to young couples forming their first home. Although Kathryn mainly designs high-end residences, her favorite projects involve historical buildings that can be revived to harmonize with today's lifestyle.

Whether working within new construction, renovation or decorative installations, Kathryn combines a mixture of styles and cultures representing the clients¿ lifestyles, personal history and preferences. Considering herself to be only the vehicle for interpretation, she feels drawn to simplicity and beautiful detailing, and unexpected ways contrasting materials and styles are combined together. The process of creating a unique portrait is what makes each job challenging and interesting.

Kathryn is married to the famous Chinese artist, Wenda Gu, and often incorporates his work into her interiors.
