Light Transitional Kitchen by Mikal Otten

Sub-Zero and Wolf 2013-2014 Kitchen Design Contest: 1st Place Transitional Kitchen. The spectacular setting of this Colorado mountain home called for a special new kitchen plan, one that would create harmony between inside and out. Denver designer Mikal Otten rose to the challenge with an ingenious, free-flowing floor plan and some of the most dramatic touches ever seen in the Kitchen Design Contest. First, the kitchen was relocated to the center of the home, more appropriate for a space that would host frequent large family gatherings. New windows extend nearly to the top of the fifteen-foot ceiling, bringing in natural light and a stronger sense of the outdoors. In proportion to the sweeping windows, Otten created a grand modernized hearth with custom hood above the Wolf 48" dual fuel range – it has a rough-hewn kinship to its locale, yet a strikingly modern look as well. Flanking the range and balancing out the wall are Sub-Zero 30" refrigerator columns – or so it appears: the left one is a hidden entry to the pantry, where the actual freezer resides. One KDC judge commented on another unique feature of the kitchen: "The curved line on the island relieves all the linear geometry elsewhere." Otten highlights the graceful curve with a polished walnut bar top. It's another of the distinctive finishes he uses in the kitchen, which also include rough-sawn walnut flooring, brushed rift white oak cabinetry, clean polished White Macaubus stone and more.
