When designing a loft or great room, it's tempting to keep the floor plan open. However, we often all too quickly realize that to remain functional, we need to introduce dividing elements. In this warm room, the bright red color block and the stately round column serve as focal elements—they anchor the living area. Other features that add diversity and visual interest: the half wall with a window-like cutout, a mirror that echoes the shape of the cutout, and large square patterned stone flooring. Even with this much division, the look is cohesive.
