Although not technically considered "mid-century" (the movement was spawned much earlier by architect Walter Gropius in Germany), the Bauhaus style deserves mention for its enduring influence. Representing a strict adherance to pure form, the resulting designs display a minimalism that is smart and beautiful. Eschewing fussiness and decorative details, architecture and design from this era feature cubic shapes, open floor plans, and a muted, steely palette. Designers known for their mastery include: Le Corbusier, Eileen Gray, and Mies van der Rohe, among others.
