The age-old dictum, Form Follows Function, basically means that for an object to perform a certain function, its design should support that function to the fullest extent possible. Frank Lloyd Wright challenged that notion by saying, "Form follows functionthat has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union." There's wisdom in his ideology, and it seems from walking the floor at both this year's ICFF and i Saloni shows that furniture designers have struck a balance between the two. From the whimsical approaches to many products, it's also evident they've decided fun should enter into the equation, and we wholeheartedly agree.
- form: designs that make us want to touch and feel
- function: designs that make us want to simplifyand beautify
- fun: designs that make us want to lighten up
