Check out an excerpt from color expert Tricia Guild's palette-pleasing Think Color.

Interior colors take their cue from the world of fashion, with hot pigments parading down runways at least one year prior to their debut in décor. This season marks a departure from the safer hues of yore, and a turn toward brighter, optimistic (and personal) schemes. As a natural extension of the many voices making themselves heard online and the volume of choices in consumer goods, comes color confidence: Today, people feel more comfortable wielding color that expresses their inner desires. We're seeing bold palettes highlighting watery turquoises, true reds, spicy oranges, metallics, and amped-up yellow-green shades. And with paint companies offering samples to help encourage experimentation and minimize the risk of a botched color job, now is the time to brighten your outlook.
  • spicy saffron: Warm and expressive oranges move into the limelight
  • gray's anatomy: Incorporate tones and textures to make a gray palette shine
  • green house: Anything but moldy, chartreuse shades represent life and nature
