If coffee's what you need, stop off at the Urth Café. There's usually a line for the outdoor terrace and cell phones are de rigueur, but there's no better place to people watch.

Across the entry hall from LAMA, stop into Twentieth to see more obscure twentieth century funiture and objects. Proprietor Stefan Lawrence has a keen eye for unusual design ranging from modern Baroque Chinese chairs to a homemade Arp-inspired coffee table.

Just inside the door to this eclectic collection of pedigreed finds is a pair of green wood nightstands with built-in lamps by Billy Haines. For a true surprise, just ask the price.

Independent thinkers Mark Zuckerman and Monty Lawton opened In House in 1993.

Pat McGann

Tucked into a courtyard, this store is home to an eclectic mix of African artifacts and contemporary and vintage art and antiques. The modern luxurious carpets throughout the store are by Christopher Farr.

Idea Space Design

Just down the street from Orange is ISD. Here, custom designed furniture mixes with cross-cultural accessories to produce a store with a warm, modern feel.

Domestic Furniture

Fans of Roy McMakin will delight in visiting Domestic Furniture, the showroom for McMakin's pieces. Arranged by room, the pieces awake the designer's clear, strong vision evident at every turn.

Zipper

This seven-year-old store offers an exuberant mix of things for the home, arranged loosely by rooms of the house, and features art that changes every two to three months.

Soolip Marie Papier

The fourth of the Soolip shops, this one features the entire line of colorful stationary items from Marie Papier in Paris.

Chestnuts and Papaya

This store/warehouse is full of surprises—a wall full of African masks, cases of Chinese carnival lanterns, tons of furniture from Asia—and that's just the beginning. Stop on the second floor and visit Pink Oyster while you're there to check out up to the minute clothing and accessories.
