Although Kevin wanted to preserve the period style, not every original feature could be saved.
A small stained-glass window with a Spanish-style crest stayed, but the fake fireplace—with an electric log—was replaced by a direct-vent gas fireplace with a new surround and tiles that are true to the spirit of the house. The original hardwood floors were rescued by refinishing and were stained a rich walnut.
