Another part of the original house, the dining room features a farmhouse table and rush-seat ladder-back chairs atop an Oriental rug—a classic New England approach to decorating that doesn't overpower the architecture.

Despite 300 years' difference in age, the new and old sections present no jolting departure of styles. Structurally, they are different—the addition is barn style, with lofty pitched ceilings—but that's the kind of change common in New England houses that have evolved over centuries.
