"I'm a big fireplace person," says architect Priscilla Zimmerman. "The inglenook just made it that much more inventive."

Space for a river-rock fireplace was created by bumping out the living room 6 feet, creating a cozy recessed area, called an inglenook in the Arts and Crafts tradition. Flanked by decorative, nonsupporting columns, the frame displays the inglenook like a piece of fine art.
