"We didn't take the kitchen and make it a different shape; we took the existing space and made it work," says kitchen designer Nancy Fortner.
Fortner reconfigured the layout of the appliancesparticularly the stove, which had blocked the doorway when it was openedand oriented the kitchen toward the dining room for entertaining. Granite countertops and sleek fir cabinets made by local craftsman Art Grice add natural colors and textures, making the space a satisfying blend of contemporary and rustic.
