Are you replacing an existing faucet?
When restricted by an existing faucet drilling, you'll need to know the spread, or center-to-center distance from handle to handle. The standard faucet spreads are single-hole, four-inch centerset, and eight-inch widespread.
Are you choosing a faucet to complement a new pre-drilled basin?
Consider the size, height, and pitch of the spout, and where the water will hit the basin. Check for adequate clearance for washing your hands. If the spout will be countertop-mounted behind a self-rimming basin, check that the spout will be high enough to clear the rim.
