"Jane Avril" by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec
from Vintage Poster Art

Limited edition vintage poster art.

Why is one artwork valued more highly than another piece by the same artist? One reason is that certain works are credited with special artistic or historical importance. Here are two ways an artwork's importance is judged:

• Relationship to overall body of work. Certain photographs seem to define an artist's style, while others mark a compelling departure for that artist. These representative works and transitional pieces are greatly valued, since they are the keys to understanding an artist's creative path.

• Historical value of work. Memory fades, but art — especially photography — can transport us instantly to another time and place. A seminal photographic work can provide fresh perspective on an entire era or artistic movement. Such photographs are vital cultural links between our past and future.
