| Introduction | Setting a Mood | What Colors Say | Paints & Beyond |
Most of us look to paint for color. In fact, paint is the quickest and most affordable means of transforming your home. As your walls take on color, an entirely new space unfolds. Daunting as the selection can be, learn to laugh as you experiment and do not lose hope! Some tips:
|
- For beginners, find a sample of a color that appeals to you in a photo, fabric, carpet swatch, or any item at all. Trust your attraction.
- Most colors read stronger and darker in an entire room than is apparent in a paint chipfor paler shades, err on the light side.
- Light will affect everything. Test your color from a quart in a variety of locations in a room. (Hold off on buying gallons until your choice is tried) Let the paint dry it will change color as it settles. View in morning, evening, day, and night.
- Keep in mind what time of day you use the room when selecting the shade. By night, color will reflect differently than by daylight.
Creative ways of experiencing color go beyond paint, however. Wallcoverings can be soft or bold, solid or patterned, and rich in texture that adds depth to colors. But beyond the walls is a world of choice. Think fabrics in the form of draperies, shades, linens, and upholstery. Don't overlook the tones of wood flooring, tile, and rugs. And finally, search for color in unusual places, such as in cabinetry or appliances in the kitchen. In all these ways and more, color irresistibly transports us to wherever we wish to be.
