Task lighting can punctuate the home office in a functional way. A desk light is a form of task lighting that will help you when looking at the computer and when reading or writing. If you're left-handed, place the fixture on the right of your task area; if you're right-handed, place it on the left. The idea is to reduce any shadow cast by your writing hand. Task lights will most often be located physically close to you. Regular and halogen incandescent lamps produce fairly direct light and a good amount of heat, which may be uncomfortable. Fluorescent task lights produce more diffuse light and much less heat. Whichever you choose, an adjustable arm and head is key, as is some shielding to protect your eyes from the exposed bulb.
