Quality wicker is extremely beautiful and durable. Contrary to popular belief, wicker is a technique, not a material. Wicker is reed, which is cut from the rattan pole and woven together over a frame. Natural wicker can be damaged by direct exposure to the elements and is best used on porches and other sheltered areas. The exception to the rule is all-weather wicker, which can be synthetic strips of resin, for example, wrapped around aluminum frames or natural wicker coated with a weather-resistant finish. When purchasing wicker, look for a smooth feel and a tight and uniform pattern.

Rattan is a member of the palm family. It grows like a bamboo but with a solid core. The rattan is harvested to make furniture, and the core is extruded to produce wicker. Like wicker furniture, rattan is suitable for use on a porch or protected area. Dusting with a damp cloth is required for maintenance.
