The rough-in dimension is the distance from the center of the waste, or drain, to the wall. To determine your approximate rough, measure from the wall to the center of the first bolt closest to the wall on the bottom of your toilet. The standard rough-in dimension measures approximately 12".

What are my options if he rough-in measures 10", 14", or is back-vented (the drain goes to the wall instead of to the floor)?

Since only the major plumbing manufacturers offer a few toilets that will accommodate your installation, there aren't any stylized or European design-oriented options available. Standard two-piece toilets in rounded and elongated bowl profiles are available in a choice of colors.
