When remodeling or replacing an existing tub, there are many 5-foot recessed models that can be considered, some with a built-in tile flange for leak-free showering. If showering will be the primary use, avoid the temptation of purchasing a very deep tub (over 18"), as it's more difficult to step over the ledge. The deck should be flat, so that the walls may be tiled down onto the three sides. Try to allow for at least a 32" width for adequate whirlpool action. Larger, deck-mounted whirlpools can be found in many sizes (up to 7 feet), shapes, and styles including two-person, corner, and scallop-edged. Allow enough deck area to frame the tub visually, and ensure that there is the recommended 6 inches for deck-mounting a faucet. If primarily one bather will use the tub, avoid getting a tub too large or too long for that person. If one's feet don't reach the end comfortably, the bather will be left afloat.
