K/BIS Kitchen and Bath Industry Show | Las Vegas, NV | May 10-12, 2005

K/BIS 2005 held its share of surprises. Catering to baby boomers with disposable income to spend on all things vine-related, appliance giants unveiled a bevy of wine chillers. The Electrolux booth deserves mention for its stunning displays, designed by fashion icon Nicole Miller and kitchen designer and author Johnny Grey. The digital age continues to infiltrate kitchen and bath, with remote laundry, ovens—and even toilets! Although stainless retains its stronghold, color is poised for a comeback... Chromatherapy was evident in the bath and Benjamin Moore's hue expert Doty Horn imparted wisdom on color trends to a near sell-out crowd. Here are some shining examples of what's on the horizon.

Concrete at Home
by Fu-Tung Cheng

If his presence at K/BIS 2005 was any indication, Fu-Tung Cheng might be the hardest-working designer in the business! I had an opportunity to speak with Cheng before the show, so stay tuned for more about his philosophy in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out an excerpt of his latest release from Taunton Press, Concrete at Home.

Built-In Tall Tub Dishwasher
from Electrolux

Electrolux is on to something by claiming that kitchens are the new living room. Spokesperson Nicole Miller weighed in on this season's top kitchen styles: color and personalization on a backdrop of classic design. Part of her must-have accessories include (not one, but) two of these sleek and virtually silent dishwashers.

Iridess Collection's Symphony
from Clarke

This new line of showers from Clarke feature distinctive, curved designs in a myriad of translucent colored finishes. The mirror-like non-porous surface cleans easier, keeps its glossy shine longer, and stays true to its color forever. The Azure exterior wall shown here had a beach-like feel.

Walk-In Wine Vault
from GE Monogram

For the serious wine connoisseur, here's a unique offering from the innovators at GE. More than a chiller, here's an almost 8 x 9-feet freestanding whole wine system, complete with an impressive computerized management system that helps you locate and track your vintages. Capable of holding up to 1,100 bottles at the perfect humidity level, this $25,000 splurge will have limited distribution starting in June 2005.

ConnectIo Double Wall Oven
from TMIO
It's cool! It's hot! It's easy! Here's the oven working families have been waiting for: Insert your meal in the refrigerated unit before work; set the oven to begin cooking an hour before arriving home via the easy, online touch-screen interface. Amidst a sea of digital innovation seen at K/BIS, this product takes top honors. (www.tmio.com)

Swash Seat Bidet
from Brondell

For the pampered bottom, here's a product launch from San Francisco-based Brondell. The company, named in homage to the inventor of the original flush toilet, offers a luxuriously heated seat with all the hygenic benefits of a traditional bidet. It even comes with his-and-hers settings and a remote. They like to call it "preferrential seating."

Cortica Cork Tiles
from Cork Concepts
Those interested in green products, take note. The cork oak tree grows in Portugal where it's stripped every 9 years for the manufacture of wine stoppers. Cork floor tiles are made from the leftover cork. You don't have to sacrifice a contemporary look if you select Cork Concepts' high-quality floor tiles. They are now available in myriad colors, finishes, and sizes.

TEN50 Design
from Heartland Appliances

A grand departure from the sleek look of today's kitchens was unveiled at the Heartland booth. A brainchild of the company's President, the new line is meant to give kitchens a jolt by introducing customization, edginess, and fun to the mix: "Forming TEN50 gives us creative freedom to design products for consumers immersed in their hobbies, their recreation, and for all the extras that make life interesting."
