By Sharon Johnson

Orange sparkle tile grout, movable storage cabinets, and a schoolhouse-style water fountain are just a few of the design details found in these award-winning bathrooms. The winners of the National Kitchen & Bath (NKBA) 2012 Bathroom Design Competition all brought something new to the table—or rather, the tub—in their creative use of color, space, and ability to make more out of less. Large Bathroom: First Place

This California bathroom hides a secret. For all the luxuries put in place for humans, equal attention has been paid to creating a space just as suitable for the owners' four-footed guests. To accommodate the needs of the clients—part-time dog breeders—the designer created storage galore for veterinary supplies and incorporated a hidden dog door that leads to a kennel. Commercial-grade lighting, bamboo cabinetry, and honed Caesarstone countertop make the space soothing and functional for clients and canines alike.
