The Best of the Baths: NKBA Bathroom Winners

By Sharon Johnson

Bathrooms have gone upscale and way out of the box. Take a look at these fantastic spaces, each recently crowned a "top bath" by the organization that knows a thing or two about such things: The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). The winning designs use color and creativity in some unexpected ways, such as backlighting a wall to showcase a handbag collection or installing a series of recessed niches to highlight sculptures gathered on far-flung travels. Whether you are setting out to build a bath from scratch or renovate an existing one, you are sure to find inspiration from these 11 award-winning designs.

Large Bathroom: First Place

In a word: Wow. Imagine your favorite, high-end boutique transported to the comfort of your own home. The abundant closet space and the backlit acrylic shelving put this owner's shoe and handbag collection front and center. Flooring, shower tiles, and countertops are all marble. The custom faucet is hand-blown glass. Pulling it all together is the real showstopper here: the custom metallic fuchsia finish on the vanity.
