Guest Room Pet Peeve: Forcing Traditional Bedroom Style

"If you're using an attic space or a quirky kind of layout as a guest bedroom, don't try to cram a large headboard into it, and embrace the quirkiness instead," says Santos.

Consider This: "Get an oversized daybed and style it like a big sofa," she suggests. Other fun ideas include staining wood cladding on a ceiling to make it a focal point of a room or whitewashing it to make it an architectural feature.

"If you're in a cottage sort of home, embrace a stone wall and consider leaving it exposed. If you're in a loft space, don't put a high bed in a pitched attic room, and consider a low bed. If you're in a modern apartment, don't get fussy with bedding," says Santos. If the guest space is in your living room, Santos advising using a screen, fabric panels, or a mesh curtain to provide privacy.
