In the Branch Coffee Table, Joan Sherman employs a method of casting called live burn-out, in which a very precise and lifelike bronze branch is made by burning the live material, instead of using a mold. Because this method does not allow duplication, each piece is unique and has a rhythm and dynamic all its own, just as in nature.
