Mitchell's 1846 "New Map of Texas, Oregon and California"

This is the way West before interstate highways or even the transcontinental railroad: the most detailed, comprehensive map of the era. It accurately depicted all of the emigrant trails: the "Oregon Route", Fremont's routes, the "Caravan Route to Santa Fe" and the "Great Spanish Trail".
