The Harlequin Pattern dates back to well before the 1500's, and most likely originated in Italy or France. The harlequin was a physically agile, clown-like character who performed in the commedia dell'arte (the first truly professional form of theater in Italy). He wore elongated diamond pattern tights. This pattern would later adorn his entire costume, and is now referred to as the Harlequin Pattern.
