Not-So-Basic Brown

By Sharon Johnson

Brown may nestle next to black on the color spectrum, but the two couldn't be more different. Brown is like the fun younger sibling—it retains a certain gravitas without taking itself too seriously. The hue can work as a versatile neutral or stand on its own as a powerful accent. If you're looking to make a space warm and welcoming yet still sophisticated, brown will do the trick! Cozy the Kitchen

We've come a long way from the days when kitchen color options were limited. Now, anything goes, and arguably no color better captures the home and hearth aspect of today's modern kitchen than the once-humble brown. The richness of this kitchen's wood cabinets, offset by the style and whimsy of the horizontal-set mosaic tile backsplash, makes this space at once cozy and smart.
