8 Beach House Design Pointers

Do's and don'ts for designing a summer vacation home

By Lisa Frederick

Think of the beach, and a host of images probably springs to mind: a sun-kissed shoreline, windblown hair, long and leisurely days. That's exactly the feel you want a beach home to evoke. Here are eight do's and don'ts to help you create a look that whispers of summer year-round.

DO allow lots of light

The beach is all about soaking up the sun, and that goes for a beach house too. Factor banks of windows, French doors, and sliding doors into your home's plan, especially on its south-facing side. A porthole window or two, tucked over a door or into a gable, makes for a fun nautical touch.
