Cover your windows

Bare windows—even the most efficient windows—will allow heat into your room. Dress windows with shades or drapes that you can pull closed during the hottest part of the day. Add a lining to further insulate your room from heat or take it a step further and use blackout lining on shades and drapes, which makes the room black—a perfect environment for sleeping or movie viewing.
