Interior design questions answered by a top designer

By Sharon Johnson

Every month we pick top designers from across the country and ask them three questions about interior design. This month, we asked Kathleen Hay to tell us her interpretation of timeless design, to describe the trends she is seeing in kitchen design and, because we couldn't resist, to confess what she now knows as a designer that she wishes she had known ten years ago.

What is your definition of timeless design?

"Timeless design doesn't play to trends or fads. It is timeless by definition, thus ensuring it will have lasting appeal. The furnishings and objects in a house should serve their purpose for many years. Of course, all rooms need refreshing over time, but a timeless room builds on itself. It evolves with a layered and eternal quality rather than as a slave to current fads. I always tell my clients to choose things they love and to surround themselves with objects that appeal to them. Ninety-nine percent of the time, they will still love those objects twenty years later."
