King Meets Queen: Blending Masculine and Feminine Decor

By Sharon Johnson

Just as opposites attract in relationships, so too do they attract in decorating. Combining the dark colors and rigid structures considered quintessentially masculine with the curvier lines and softer color palette associated with the feminine creates a happy dynamic tension that adds an undeniable frisson of energy. If your room is veering too feminine (or vice versa), add one contrasting element and watch it come alive.

Tribal Meets Romantic

The shapely curves and romantic style of the teardrop crystal chandelier contrast nicely with the tribal statuary and gridded, hard-edged angles of the metal étagère. Note how the feminine lines of the frosted glass vase centerpiece are mimicked by the swoop of the chair arm rests.
