Sue Adams: Design Ideas & Home Inspiration

Interior design questions answered by a top designer

By Sharon Johnson

Every month we pick top designers from across the country and ask them three questions about interior design. This month, we asked Sue Adams to tell us her interpretation of timeless design, to describe the trends she is seeing in kitchen design and, because we couldn't resist, to confess what she now knows as a designer that she wishes she had known ten years ago.

What is your definition of timeless design?

"I believe in starting with simple shapes and clean, geometric lines. That, to me, is what timeless design is all about—classic shapes, forms, and materials. You can always embellish and add details, but it's best to start simply, as it is easier to add than to take away. And you have to be careful of the distinction between stylish design and good design. Stylish is 'of the day,' while good design truly endures."
