Suzanne Kasler Style Defined

Get inspired by Suzanne Kasler's classic design aesthetic.

By Lisa Frederick

Within the space of a decade, Atlanta's Suzanne Kasler has gone from acclaimed interior designer to bona fide brand, creating furniture, textile, and accessories collections for a handful of top-shelf manufacturers. Her style—classic and versatile, cultivated yet casual, with exquisite attention to detail—feels as appropriate in a rustic cottage as in an urban townhouse. Kasler has professed a special affection for French culture and aesthetics, and many of her designs are inspired by classic French periods and pieces.

Under Kasler's hand, Southern warmth and charm meet Continental chic, energized with a fresh, upbeat attitude. She's known for creating a clean, refined architectural background that elevates the furnishings and accents within. Kasler is meticulous in her sense of scale and proportion, lending her rooms a beautiful balance. A few dashes of modern edginess in the mix add a sly element of surprise.

Try these tips to replicate Kasler's signature approach to décor.

Timeless motifs. Sunburst, Chippendale, and other classic patterns highlight Kasler's designs. Her signature is the quatrefoil, layered in through pieces as diverse as mirrors, chair backs, and bed linens. Jazz up the look by slipping in a hint of zebra, cheetah, or another animal print; cheerful stripes; or bold geometrics.

Unfussy elegance. In Kasler's furnishings, stately finishes such as mirror and gilt dress up simple lines and straightforward functionality. An artful mix of surfaces and textures, from wood to metal to acrylic, creates the casually collected look that the designer favors. Fabrics tend toward comfortable cotton and linen blends, elevated with a few silk and velvet notes.

Light, feminine colors. White is Kasler's hallmark hue, especially on walls, millwork, and other architectural details. Her fabrics and textiles wear subtle shades such as beige, periwinkle, pale blue, rose, and spring green. Jolts of persimmon, turquoise, gold, and other bright colors shake up the neutrals and pastels.

Contemporary twists. Kasler-crafted interiors usually feature modern art, found objects, and sprinkles of whimsy that bring the traditional elements to life. She might mount a print of a film star on a wall, hang a chandelier made of branches, or dress down a formal dining chair with a flirty slipcover. The key is that these lighthearted notes never upset the room's grace and balance.

Distinctive detailing. From nailheads and cording to button tufts and grosgrain trim, tiny details define Kasler's work and add a polished look to any space. Go monochromatic, such as welting in the same fabric used for upholstery, or layer in bits of color and pattern with contrasting flanges, ribbon ties, and box pleats.
