How to Choose Home Office Lighting

By The Editors at HomePortfolio

Many of us have a home office, whether it's a dedicated room or part of a larger space. Perhaps even now you're in your home office reading this. Is the sun streaming in? Or are you curled up in a pool of light cast by a favorite floor lamp, taking a restful moment after putting the kids to sleep? Either way, some combination of light and lighting is at play. Read on to learn the three different ways of lighting a home office.

Ambient Lighting

For ambient lighting, consider how rooms are generally lit. A light source, which can be anything from a candle or light fixture to the sun shining through a window, casts its light into the room. The light then interacts with the room's colors and furnishings. Keep in mind that:
  • Light-colored surfaces reflect light
  • Dark-colored surfaces absorb light
  • Matte finishes diffuse light
  • Glossy finishes act as mirrors

For visual comfort, especially when working at the computer, uniform lighting is helpful. In terms of brightness, try to get the room illumination close to the screen illumination.
