Great Investment: Deck Addition

Creating outdoor living space by adding a wood deck is a smart-money strategy, according to the Remodeling report. Shell out about $9,300 for a 16x20-foot deck built with pressure-treated boards and railings, and you'll see 77 cents back on every dollar spent when you sell the house. Composite decks are valued for durability and easier maintenance, but the higher cost of $15,000 doesn't yield a higher return. Build a composite deck and you'll likely see a 67 percent return on your dollars.
