8 Nurseries That Will Grow with Your Child

Baby nursery ideas with big-kid hearts

By Lisa Frederick

It's easy to fall into the trap of doing a nursery in ruffles, jungle prints, and juvenile colors, but it's smarter to plan for the long haul and create a nursery that can grow along with your child, saving yourself both cost and effort. These eight spaces feel perfectly on point for babies, yet a few simple switches can take them through the next stages of their little occupants' lives.

Choose refined colors

Take away the child's rocking chair and the animal prints, and you'd never know this was a nursery at all. The nuanced palette—saturated coral, creamy white, and a whisper of blue—is a riff on traditional baby colors. A free-form shag rug feels cozy enough for little toes yet sophisticated enough for a teen, and a contemporary armchair, rather than a glider, would look appropriate for any room in the house.
