By Sharon Johnson

It is one thing to have an award-winning kitchen; it is another altogether to have a National Kitchen & Bath Association award-winning kitchen! The NKBA sets the highest of standards, and each year designers across the United States and beyond vie for top honors in this ultra-competitive design competition. Scroll through the slideshow to see the 2012 winners. These top designers combine decorating creativity with architectural know how to create wonderful, winsome kitchen spaces that we would all be thrilled to call our own.

Large Kitchen: First Place

This oversize space could be mistaken for a restaurant kitchen, as chock-a-block as it is with commercially scaled refrigerators, freezers and ovens, not to mention prep stations that would delight any sous chef. Three appliance garages allow for easy storage of large, heavy blenders and mixers. A custom-coffered ceiling keeps the large-scale vent hood from feeling too industrial, while other decorator details keep the space feeling like home. No surprise, this fabulous first-place kitchen also won the NKBA's coveted "Best Kitchen" award.
