Setting standards for 200 years, Josiah Spode opened his pottery shop in 1770. He is best remembered for perfecting blue underglaze printing on earthenware to achieve elaborately designed patterns. Spode is also recognized as one of the first to perfect the formula for producing translucent, brilliant white English bone china.
