7 Ideas for Putting a Game Room Into Play

Designer tips for creating a seriously fun space

By Lisa Frederick

It used to be that a home game room meant a pool table sitting in the middle of the den or a poker table in a man-cave basement. Not anymore. Today's game rooms are carefully planned, beautifully decorated, and well tailored to homeowners' passions and preferences. Kyle Tage, AIA, a partner with Locati Architects in Bozeman, Montana, suggests the following ways to get gaming.

Consider Your Games of Choice

Before you outfit a game room, you'll need to think about what kinds of games you intend to play there. "'Game room' is a pretty all-encompassing [term]," Tage says. "Is it a place for kids to come hang out? Is it where you want to sit at a card table for eight people or have a billiards table?"

The room's function will dictate its configuration, furniture, decor and other trappings, so don't rush the planning process. "We're seeing people putting in Ping-Pong tables, shuffleboard, video game systems, arcade games—anything that's fun and a cool activity to do," Tage says.
