It's only in the past few decades that living rooms truly have begun to, well, live. No longer are they prim, proper spaces preserved more for show than for enjoyment; today's living areas are hubs of family activity, entertaining, and relaxation. Follow Boston designer Rachel Reider's advice to bring out the best in yours.

Good Plan

As you plan your living area, take a mental inventory of the different ways in which you'll use it. A space that doesn't jibe with your habits is a space that never gets lived in. "It's important to think about your lifestyle so the space can fit your needs," Reider says. "Do you tend towards more formal spaces or casual ones? Do you like to entertain? How many people would you like to seat? How will you use this room? These are questions I typically ask clients during the design process that really drive our designs."
