7 Steps to a Warm, Wonderful Home Library

Design ideas for a dream reading space

By Lisa Frederick

While a home library sounds luxurious, it's more accessible than you think. Even if you're just getting started on a book collection or don't have a ton of room to spare, there's a way to craft your own little corner for curling up with a good read. Suzanne Tucker, ASID, of Tucker and Marks, shares her design tips for making a home library work.

Repurpose a Room

If you don't have a dedicated library space, Tucker says, create one in an area of your house designed for a different purpose. "A home office can be ideal, [or] a spare bedroom," she says. "Or simply make a family room cozier by adding freestanding shelving and books."

Don't think a library has to be limited to classic novels or biographies—you can curate other types of book collections into a space of their own. "Even in this digital world, I still love a culinary library in the kitchen if space allows," Tucker says.
