Myth 1: Ceilings should be white.

Busted: "That myth actually makes me cringe," Schumacher says. "One decorating secret is to paint the ceiling with a tint of lavender—no matter the wall color." This can draw the eye up, making the ceiling seem airy.

"Better yet," says Schumacher, "wallpaper the ceiling! Any grasscloth or graphic pattern. Nowadays, there are a multitude of textures and even faux bois [false wood] wallpapers that look amazing on ceilings!"
