Clean and Brighten

Over time, deck surfaces collect dirt and the wood dulls as it weathers. Use a deck cleaning and brightening kit to remove grime, stains, and mold, and then renew the wood surface with sealant or stain. Start by securing loose boards (and replacing warped or badly damaged ones), sanding rough spots, and making repairs as needed. Follow the manufacturer's directions for removing buildup on the wood, which typically involves applying a liquid cleaner with a garden sprayer, shop broom, or paint roller. Allow the solution to set as recommended and then rinse it off with a garden hose. Once the deck surface dries completely (usually a few days), finish the deck with stain or sealer to brighten and preserve the wood.
