Shine On or Off?

Paint comes in a variety of sheens including flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. The more shine a paint finish offers, the more durable, moisture- and stain-resistant, and washable it is.

Flat, matte, and low-luster paints appear more velvety but don't wash well or resist stains or moisture. Because semi-gloss and gloss sheens reflect light, they make a room appear larger when applied to walls but also highlight every dent and flaw in a wall's surface. Before applying semi-gloss or gloss sheens, fill and smooth imperfections. Flat, eggshell, and satin finishes absorb light and make a room feel cozier while camouflaging less-than-perfect surfaces.
